Ride Information

Eagar to Reserve, NM overnight ride, Friday & Saturday, May 11th & 12th

Jeff & Renita Olson

This ride is approximately 130 miles round trip.  The first leg, Nutrioso to Reserve, will be approximately 60 miles.  The return trip approximately 70 miles.  This is a trailered ride and leaves from a staging location on private property. Clifford Wise has granted club members permission to stage from his private property for the ride to Reserve NM. Normally the ride would stage from the Eagar Rodeo grounds, but this time of the year the trail through the Sipe Wildlife area is closed. The Clifford Wise property is located on the east side of highway 180 and south side of county road 2116. The staging is located 9+ miles south of the Eagar Rodeo grounds and is easy to locate by the new cell tower south of Nelson Reservoir. The ride will depart the staging area at 8 am.

The ride to Reserve is mostly on forest roads except for a short section in and around Loco Knoll and along Mamie Creek, which are at the beginning of the ride. This portion of the ride is somewhat rocky with some areas of off camber. Along Mamie Creek there are areas of overgrown brush that will rub against the sides of side by sides. The ride goes through tall pine forest on the east side of Escudilla Mountain, passes through meadows and cienegas, through Largo Canyon, stops at Toriette Lake and finally comes out onto New Mexico highway 12. It is necessary to take highway 12 (a paved road) for 5 miles into the village of Reserve NM. Reserve is a community of approximately 1600 people, it has 2 gas stations, 2 restaurants, a grocery store and the world famous “Uncle Bill’s Bar”.

The ride is limited to 10 machines due to lodging limitations. If you wish to participate in this fun and scenic ride you must secure lodging reservations before signing up for the ride with the ride leader. Reservations must be made prior to ride sign up (unless you are camping). Suggested hotel:  Frisco Lodge 575-533-6600. Once you have made lodging arrangements, contact the ride leaders, Jeff & Renita Olson, at jeffcolson0811@yahoo.com or 623-853-6472 for questions and ride reservations.

The ride should arrive in Reserve early afternoon. After everyone has checked into their lodging accommodations the group will go to the Spurgeon Ranch for fun and food. The Spurgeon Ranch belongs to Renita’s parents and was her childhood home. There will be a potluck dinner at the ranch, hot dogs and hamburgers provided by Jeff and Renita, all other food items will be provided by the ride participants.  Jeff and Renita will also provide cold drinks. The ranch has a 7 hole “cowboy” golf course that will provide a fun afternoon for all. Don’t worry about bringing clubs, “one” will be provided to you if you wish to play.

The return ride takes a little different route with a stop in Luna NM at the rodeo grounds for a lunch break. Ride participants must bring a lunch and snacks for both days, or purchase a lunch and snacks at the restaurant Saturday morning.
